Update to Attempted Robbery / Shooting

 

(Fayetteville, NC) – Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Robbery Unit have obtained images from a video surveillance system from the attempted robbery and subsequent shooting that occurred on August 18, 2016, at The Skylite Fast Mart. Detectives are requesting the public’s assistance in identifying the two suspects depicted in the images.

   

The victim from the incident has been identified as Thomas Jones (B/M, 23 years of age), of the 1000 block of Leslie Drive in Fayetteville, NC. The firearm Jones had in his possession during the incident was previously reported as stolen. Jones also had outstanding warrants for his arrest for Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and 2nd Degree Kidnapping.

 

Jones was taken in to custody on scene and taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center, where the outstanding warrants were served and he was charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm. Jones received a $5,000 secured bond.

Attempted Robbery / Shooting

 

(Fayetteville, NC) – On Thursday, August 18, 2016 at approximately 9:53 pm, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to 6047 Morganton, The Skylite Fast Mart, in reference to a report of an attempted robbery.

 

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim parked in front of the business and was then approached by two male suspects. One of the suspects then displayed a firearm and pointed it at the victim. The victim attempted to leave the area by reversing his vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was still in drive at the time, which caused the victim’s vehicle to strike the business.

 

One of the suspects then fired gunshots at the victim, at which time the victim brandished his own firearm and returned gunfire at the suspects. The suspects fled the area on foot.

 

The victim did not sustain any injuries from the gunfire. The victim’s name is currently being withheld so he may have a chance to notify his immediate family of the incident.

 

Detectives are requesting anyone in the area at the time of the attempted robbery and subsequent shooting contact them.
