Arrest Made in Ongoing Shooting Investigation

Arrest Made in Ongoing Shooting Investigation


(Fayetteville, NC) – On Thursday, March 7, 2019, at approximately 12:05 pm, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to the area of Langdon Street and Murchison Road reference reports of gunfire and a vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, officers located three (3) vehicles crashed into three (3) separate utility poles. The preliminary investigation revealed one (1) of the crashed vehicles as well as a fourth vehicle, which was not on scene, were involved in a shooting with each other prior to the crash. The driver of the crashed vehicle involved in the shooting fled the area on foot upon crashing into a utility pole.

Officers with the Fayetteville Police Department’s K9 Team and Aviation Unit responded to the area and a search was immediately initiated. As a result of the search, the driver who fled was located and has been identified as Damian R. Guthary (B/M, 24 years of age), of the 3600 block of Pine Lake Drive.

Guthary was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center where he has been charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, as well as numerous traffic violations. Guthary is currently being held on a $200,000 secured bond.

No life-threatening injuries were sustained during the crash and no gunshot victims were located.

The Fayetteville Police Department and our law enforcement partners remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of the citizens of Fayetteville. Agents with The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are assisting with this investigation and the investigation is ongoing. Additional arrests may be forthcoming.
