Suspect Charged During Cold Case Rape Investigation



(Fayetteville, NC) – Detectives with the Fayetteville Police Department’s Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit have charged a suspect in connection with a rape which occurred in January of 2009.


Shawn Joseph Barnes, (B/M, 49 years of age), of Raleigh, NC was charged, and arrested, for 2nd Degree Rape, 1st Degree Kidnapping, and Battery on an Unborn Child.

During the investigation the victim, who was pregnant at the time, indicated she was walking down Murchison Rd when the suspect approached and asked if she needed a ride. Barnes then drove the victim to an isolated location where he assaulted and raped her.

The initial investigation in 2009 went unsolved; however, the sexual assault kit from this case was recently tested utilizing funding from the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s FY2015 National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative Grant and Barnes was identified as a suspect.  Additional information about the federal initiative can be found at
